The 1964 presidential election was the last election in which the state of Idaho voted for the Democratic Party nominee. It was the only election since 1948 in which this happened. President Lyndon B. Johnson, despite his nationwide landslide victory, defeated the Republican nominee, Senator Barry Goldwater of Arizona by only 1.84%, or 5,363 votes. Idaho was the second-closest state in the 1964 election (Arizona was the first).
